We tried to prove our own fund rating wrong
Most apps rank funds on last year’s return. It’s like judging a cricketer by one innings — a manager can look brilliant for eighteen months on a single lucky sector bet and still sit at the top of the list.
GuideFin Rating scores every Direct-Growth fund on four factors, each measured across roughly 25 overlapping three-year windows — never a single date. It runs on the fund summary, the category leaderboard, and head-to-head comparisons, and it refreshes on the 5th of every month.

What actually gets measured
Four factors, each scored against the fund’s own category. Tap How we rate on any fund and the same breakdown is laid out line by line — no black box.
Beat its index
Alpha over the category benchmark, adjusted for risk. We take the median across every window, so one lucky year can't carry a fund.
Return for the risk
The Sortino ratio — return earned per unit of downside risk. Upside swings aren't punished. Only falls count against a fund.
Consistency
How many of those windows the fund spent in the better half of its category, rather than how it looked on one flattering date.
Holds up in falls
How the fund actually behaved in real market corrections — and how quickly it climbed back afterwards.

We tested it on ourselves — and published the result
We took the rankings as they stood in 2022, and again in 2023, then checked what those funds actually returned afterwards. The gap between our shortlist and the plain category average stayed inside 0.6% a yearin either direction — small enough to be statistical noise. A simpler ranking method did no better. The finding matches decades of global evidence, including SPIVA’s persistence studies.
We could have buried that. Instead we built it into the product: GuideFin Rating is described everywhere in the app as a shortlist to research, not a leaderboard to obey. A rating you can’t question is just a claim.
What it will and won’t tell you
- Category-relative, always
- A Small Cap fund is only ever measured against other Small Cap funds. Hybrid funds weight further toward downside control, since managing risk is closer to their actual job.
- Rated only with a 3-year record
- Roughly 268 of the ~1,200 schemes we track qualify. An unrated fund is a gap in our data, not a verdict on the fund.
- Debt funds are left out on purpose
- Category return gaps there run 0.0–0.5% a year — inside noise. Ranking them would fake a precision the data doesn't support.
- Built to stay still
- A fund joins the shortlist at rank 4 or better and only leaves at rank 8 or worse, so ordinary noise never triggers a switch that costs you exit load and capital gains tax. Ties break on expense ratio, not on a hair of past return.

Every goal gets a plan — not just a number
Retirement isn't the only finish line. GuideFin lets you plan your child's education, a home, a wedding — each with its own assets, its own timeline, and its own inflation-adjusted target.
Goal Templates
Start from six ready-made goals — Child Education, Dream House, Car, Marriage, Medical Emergency, Holiday — or build your own from scratch.
Real Asset Mapping
Link what you actually own to each goal: mutual funds, stocks, NPS, PPF, Sukanya Samriddhi, gold, real estate, FDs, and savings. Nine asset classes, one clear picture.
Smart Warnings
GuideFin flags mismatches before they hurt — equity that's too volatile for a 2-year goal, or a PPF lock-in that outlasts your timeline.
Live Goal Status
Every goal carries a verdict: On Track, Needs Attention, or At Risk — recalculated as your assets and SIPs change, with an optimizer that shows exactly how to close the gap.
Coverage across India's premier AMCs
NAVs for 1,200+ schemes synced every market day, with expense ratios sourced from official AMFI monthly disclosures. Funds covered from 18 leading Asset Management Companies.

The pension money nobody analyses
Most investing apps treat NPS as a tax-saving checkbox — a number you contribute to and never look at again. GuideFin gives it the same treatment as a mutual fund: managers ranked against their peers, a projection you can argue with, and the maturity rules modelled as they actually work.
Pension funds are ranked on the same peer-relative logic as GuideFin Rating, within Tier I and Tier II and within each asset class — never across them.

Managers ranked
Every pension fund manager scored within its own asset class — Equity, Corporate Debt, Government — and labelled Ahead of peers, In the pack, or Behind peers, with the reason spelled out.
Your corpus at 60
Put in what you contribute each month and GuideFin projects the corpus you'll actually retire on, split into the lump sum you take and the pension it buys.
Your split, your call
Set the equity, corporate debt and government mix under Active Choice — or let Auto Choice glide it with age — and watch the projection move as you change it.
Real maturity rules
Annuity rate as a dial rather than a fixed guess, the 60/40 lump-sum split modelled properly, and the December 2025 exit rules built in — including the tax that came with them.
From a monthly contribution to a monthly pension

Pick a manager on evidence
Every manager's rank, the factors behind it, and a track record next to the peer median.

Decide the split
Slide how much you take as cash against how much becomes pension, and set the annuity rate yourself.

Save it and revisit
The whole plan — contributions, allocation, maturity — saved and ready to revisit as things change.

Frequently asked questions
What is GuideFin?
GuideFin is India's first goal-driven retirement planning app featuring GuideFin Rating (our own four-factor fund score), Monte Carlo simulations, 3-Bucket tax-aware withdrawal strategies, goal planning for life goals like education and a home, mutual fund intelligence across 1,200+ tracked schemes, a dedicated NPS module, and 15 financial calculators including SIP, SWP, EMI, FD, and PPF. It is built by FinThinkHub for Indian retail investors.
How does the retirement calculator work in GuideFin?
GuideFin's retirement calculator uses 3,000-iteration Monte Carlo simulations to project retirement corpus outcomes across P5/P25/P50/P75/P95 confidence levels. It accounts for inflation, life events, and uses the 3-Bucket strategy (Equity, Debt, Cash) for tax-efficient withdrawals during retirement.
Can I use GuideFin for FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) planning?
Yes. GuideFin supports FIRE planning with corpus shortfall detection, inflation-adjusted projections, and customizable retirement age targets. The Monte Carlo engine maps multiple market scenarios to show your probability of achieving financial independence at your desired age.
Can I plan for goals other than retirement?
Yes. The Goal Planning module covers education, home, marriage, car, medical and travel goals — each with its own assets, SIPs, inflation-adjusted target, and a live On-Track / At-Risk status. Start from six ready-made templates or build a custom goal from scratch.
What financial calculators are available in GuideFin?
GuideFin includes 15 calculators: SIP, Step-Up SIP, Lumpsum, and SWP for investments; EPF, PPF, SSY, and SCSS for government schemes; FD, FD with Payout, and RD for deposits; EMI and Advanced EMI (with prepayment scenarios) for loans; plus Inflation and Bucket Strategy planners. NPS is no longer a single calculator — it has its own module covering pension fund rankings, projections to 60, and the December 2025 exit rules. A comparison engine pits any two head-to-head — SIP vs PPF, FD vs RD — with the math shown.
How many mutual fund schemes does GuideFin track?
GuideFin syncs NAV data every market day for 1,200+ mutual fund schemes across 18 leading AMCs including HDFC, SBI, ICICI Prudential, Kotak, Mirae Asset, and Parag Parikh. Around 268 of those carry a GuideFin Rating — a fund needs a three-year track record to be scored. Features include market dips analysis, historical backtesting, peer comparison, and expense ratio data from AMFI's official monthly disclosures.
What is GuideFin Rating?
GuideFin Rating is our own fund score, live across the Mutual Fund Insight module. Every Direct-Growth fund is scored on four factors — alpha over its category benchmark (35%), return per unit of downside risk measured by the Sortino ratio (25%), consistency across roughly 25 rolling three-year windows (20%), and how it held up in real market corrections (20%). Funds are only ever compared within their own category, need a three-year record to be rated, and ratings refresh on the 5th of every month.
Does a top GuideFin Rating mean the fund will outperform?
No — and we tested that claim on ourselves. We ranked funds as they stood in 2022 and 2023, then checked what they actually returned afterwards. The gap between our shortlist and the plain category average stayed inside 0.6% a year in either direction, which is statistical noise. That matches decades of global evidence, including SPIVA's persistence studies. GuideFin Rating turns a category of 40 funds into a shortlist of about 5 that have behaved sensibly, each with a stated reason — a shortlist to research, not a prediction.
Where does the fund data come from?
NAVs sync daily on market days from public mutual fund data sources; expense ratios come from AMFI's official monthly disclosures and are shown with their as-of month.
Is GuideFin free to use?
Yes — no subscription. Guest Mode works without an account, with calculators and insights available for free. A free email + OTP sign-in unlocks saving plans and premium analysis. We never sell your data.
